Finished with shearing

Posted by Sharon

Up bright and early today to prepare for shearing the remainder of the flock! When I got to the barn this morning, the moon was preparing to set over the trees to the west, and the sun was just beginning to peek over the mountains to the east – I just had to take a couple of picture to share. Believe it or not, these two were taken seconds after each other; I took one, turned around, and took the other:

And, shearing is finished! I now have bags and bags of fleeces to sort through, very exciting! If anyone is interested in purchasing raw fleece please contact me as soon as possible, because I will be otherwise processing all of these into roving and yarn.

Luck of the Irish I suppose, though I am not Irish… Violet delivered triplets today. Surprise! She was never in the same pasture as any of the rams, I had no idea she had gotten pregnant, and I have no idea which ram managed to get her through the fence.  Still, she delivered three beautiful healthy little ones – female, male, male – that I’m going to name Erin, Patrick and Shamrock in honor of the day.  They are beautiful and bouncy and all nursing, though momma is looking frazzled and exhausted. As I don’t know who their sire is I wont be able to register these lambs. I will be wethering the boys and they will all be up for sale this summer once weaned.

Done with lambing

Posted by Sharon

Valerie & Buttercup have delivered their lambs as well. Valerie had a great big single male yesterday, with a big white spot on top of his head and a white tipped tail, who we are calling Mastodon.  Buttercup had twin females this morning, however sadly one was stillborn.  The second little fighter we’ve named Iron Maiden.  Valerie was having a few problems getting used to the whole motherhood idea yesterday, but she’s caught on just fine and is doing a great job with Mastodon today.  Buttercup is still a little freaked out, I think partly due to this being her first pregnancy and party due to losing one of her lambs. I’ve been trying to help her and ensure that Iron Maiden is able to nurse.  So far so good, she’s doing OK but not great… still, I haven’t had to resort to a bottle yet, so I’m happy.

So let’s see, that brings the spring lamb total to four males (Metallica, Megadeth, Motorhead & Mastodon) and two females (Marilyn Manson & Iron Maiden).  All beauties. Here’s a little video clip I took of the first four lambs and their moms outside this morning, see for yourself:

March = Lambs

Our first lambs arrived very early this morning! Rosie delivered twin boys, and I’ve decided to name them Metallica and Megadeth *giggle* I am very VERY pleased to introduce our two newest little headbangers! A happy mama Rosie is watching over them, and taking very good care of her new little ones.
